“Yoga is the journey of the Self, to the Self, Through the Self”

June 21st has a lot of significance. It is the longest day of the year for the countries in the Northern Hemisphere (Like India). Thus since its inception in the year 2015, June 21st is celebrated as The International Day of Yoga all over the world. This idea was proposed by our honourable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. He said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in our well-being.”

International Yoga Day was celebrated by the students and teachers at Hongirana School of Excellence with great enthusiasm. We had the students from Nursery to grade X assemble at the common assembly area where Harshitha of class X welcomed the Chief Guest Mrs. Jayalaxmi from Art of Living, Bangalore, and Mrs. Shobha K, Principal, Hongirana School of Excellence. Mrs. Jayalaxmi addressed the gathering and shared her insight about how and why Yoga is important in one’s life. She had made all to do Pranayama (this is the formal practice of controlling the breath, which is the source of our prana, or vital life force) and meditation which for about 15 minutes. While meditating one could feel the kiss of the cool breeze, rustling of leaves and of course birds chirping. That was a wonderful experience as it helped the students and the teachers relieve their stress and feel fresh and energetic. And the Sudarshana Kriya for the selected classes continued after the programme.

The programme ended with the Vote of Thanks from Harshitha and classes commenced as usual; however the students and the teachers were more energetic than usual, all thanks goes to the Meditation.

Regular practice of yoga will surely help our students achieve a better life, physically, mentally and spiritually as well. Let’s move towards making a “Yoga Day Every Day” rather than just on June 21st.

”People do better when they feel better.”

This is true for everyone, but especially for teens who often hear endless criticism, nagging and complaining about their poor performance. At this time they need encouragement and motivation.        In order to provide a motivational platform with many learning techniques Hongirana Independent PU college organised a workshop to II PU students on  Memory and Motivation from June 13th to June 23rd by the resource person Mr.Sathish from Mysore. Teenagers enjoy a sense of humour and respond to it much better than to lectures. This is why Mr. Sathish through his motivational thoughts and videos tries to come closer to the students.  Throughout the session he taught many techniques over improving the concentration, memory power, reading and also some yoga and meditation. Students were mesmerized by his words which enhanced the love and respect towards their parents and  nation.                                                                              The session ended with a valedictory programme on June 23rd, to which parents were invited to experience the expected changes in their children. Mr Sathish addressed parents about the parental role in supporting their children and also he gave suggestions on food habits that need to be followed by everyone.                                                                    The ten days’ session has brought a drastic change in the attitude of students. They have taken a resolution to carry the learning throughout their life time.

WELCOME TO THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2019 – 2020 Report on Welcome day (Middle section)

                                          “Nature is the Best Teacher”

A cheerful “Welcome” helps children for a positive start to their school journey. Hongirana School of Excellence opened its doors for the students of Grade 6th to 8th on  May 27th 2019. The academic year 2019-2020 started off with the assembly in the presence of the Principal Mrs. Shobha Ravindra, where the new students and staff were welcomed to the Hongirana family.

To enhance the teacher – student bonding we started off the day with the ‘Name Card’ activity, where the students were asked to prepare a name card in different shapes and sizes. This was an interesting task as everyone enjoys art and craft.

Also to make this journey an exciting, successful and happy experience we took the children for a Walk in the Nature. Walking for miles together on a bright sunny day is not an easy task, but the children’s smile and enthusiasm was in a next level which motivated the teachers who accompanied them. 6th grade students visited the Trayambakeshwara Temple, where they sang devotional songs in praise of the God. On the way to the temple, they saw Rubber plantation and various other trees which they were able to recognize and describe.

7th grade students visited the USHAKIRANA, which is a dense forest near to  school.  There the students  were involved in the  meditation, which helped them to give their   ears to forest sounds like chirping of birds, blowing of winds etc.  Post this, they were divided into small groups  by assigning particular tasks. Among these, Some  observed the  medicinaly valued plants, where as others  collected various stones and leaves from the forest land.

8th grade students visited a forest area in Mattikoppa, where they were asked to think over an adjective as prefix to their  names. This activity helped the child to think out of the box and describe himself in a word. Meanwhile it also helped the teachers to  identify which zone had he/she is interested in, as some of the adjectives were adventurous, super, multitalented, rocking etc….

Afternoon session was fun filled. Students were carried away by various classroom games and activities. The day ended with happiness and cheerfulness on the faces of the children.

“Cooking the food is an art, knowing about the food is smart and sharing our food with others is part”.

To give a platform to students to know about the verities in food and food culture, Hongirana High School section organised food fest on 29th of September.

Aims of Food Fest:

  • To know the nutrition value of food items.
  • To develop creativity.
  • To develop presentation skills.
  • To bring team work.
  • To inculcate the culture of sharing.

With these aims, students of class IX and X were asked to bring Malnad food items and exhibit in the mess hall. They presented them in their section wise groups. They brought more than one hundred items that day and presented them in a very creative manner.

As guests, some parents were invited and they inaugurated the event by preparing food by using ingredients. They visited the food exhibition tables along with the staff members. All the items were so tasty that time was not sufficient to taste all the food items. Students also participated with a great zeal and enthusiasm. It was really a very good platform for them to exhibit their talent in cooking or in presenting the food. Later at the end of the event all the children shared the items that they brought among themselves. In total the delicious, hygienic and tasty food items brought grand success to the event.

Students Opinion:

Some of the hostel inmates opined that it was a great day for them to taste variety of foods in on day as they remain out of their house for a long time. Some day scholars opined that it gave them a great pleasure of sharing their food with all their friends, a feeling which can’t be purchased in the market.

In total, it was a great success with the cooperation of parents, coordination of the students and commitment of the teachers.
