OVERNIGHT ADVENTUROUS CAMP AT HONNEMARADU

“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”

                                                                                                           – John Muir

In order to instill a spirit of adventure, foster explorative inquisitiveness, promote team spirit, and enhance self-esteem through various experiences, the Hongirana middle section organized an overnight adventurous camp led by a dynamic duo, Mr.Swami and Mrs. Nomito, along with their team, for the students of class 8th on December 21st and 22nd, 2023, at Honnemaradu, a Sharavathi backwater area.

A group of 120 students along with six escort teachers left the campus at 9:45 AM on December 21, 2023, and reached the campsite by 11 AM. At first, children were introduced to the camp guides, Mr. Swami and Mrs. Nomito, along with their team. They assembled the children and briefed them about the activities they were going to take up throughout camp. The chosen activities were swimming in the backwater, trekking into the heart of nature, paddling through the river surface, and team-building endeavors like the enchanting “Whistle in the Tree” and the “Human Knots” activities.

To kick off the adventure, the students were grouped into three teams, each entrusted to the guidance of their respective mentors for a two-hour exploration. The first group, accompanied by two escort teachers, embarked on a mesmerizing trek to Gali Gopura Gudda. As they traversed the scenic trail, the guide team not only led the way but also shared insightful narratives about the history of the Sharavathi River that connected the past to the present. Amidst the lush surroundings, they unveiled the importance of the river in the Malnad area while also introducing the students to the rich variety of trees that adorned the campsite. As the students reached the peak of Gali Gopura Gudda, a breathtaking panorama unfolded before them. Nestled within the embrace of nature’s grandeur, the Linganamakki Dam revealed itself in all its splendor. From this peak point, the students were treated to a mesmerizing view of the backwater.

While the first group set out on a trek, the second team plunged into the refreshing embrace of the backwaters for a memorable swimming session. Led by instructors, the students immersed themselves in the cool waters, creating ripples of laughter and excitement with life jackets.

Guided by the watchful eyes of the escort teachers, the students not only enjoyed the sheer joy of swimming but also absorbed valuable lessons in water safety. The backwater setting added a touch of serenity to this aquatic adventure, creating an unforgettable experience that blended the thrill of swimming with nature’s aquatic embrace.

The third group was further divided into three subgroups, each poised for a distinct adventure. One subgroup, with paddles in hand and spirits high, embarked on a captivating paddling activity. Guided by skilled instructors, the students navigated the mirrored surface of the backwaters. Students learned the importance of teamwork while moving the boat. They enjoyed themselves a lot during the activity.

Another subgroup delved into team-building activities that added layers of excitement and collaboration. The “Whistle in the Tree” activity set the stage, challenging students to work together to achieve a harmonious outcome. The group transitioned seamlessly into the formation of human pyramids, a physical and mental test of coordination and trust. The art of “Tying the Whistle” brought an element of creativity and problem-solving.

As they navigated the intricacies of knotting, students not only secured a whistle in the tree but also wove stronger bonds within their subgroup.

The last subgroup engaged in the captivating challenge of “Human Knots.” Standing in a tight circle, students intertwined their arms, creating a complex, interconnected web. Guided by problem-solving prowess and communication, the participants navigated through the human knot, unraveling the entwined arms with a blend of strategy and cooperation.

Lunch was served after one set of activities. Children had food with their friends. Later, groups were exchanged for respective activities. In the evening, we all had snacks and went to collect wood for the fire camp. Students, teachers, and guides alike gathered in a circle, each face illuminated by the dancing glow of the fire. The students enthusiastically presented different cultural programs like skits on conserving forests, mimes on water usage, songs, etc. After the campfire, dinner was served. Further, all children were allowed to rest in their respective areas. The next morning, after finishing the daily chores, a collective effort unfolded as everyone gathered at the campfire site. In a display of teamwork, students and teachers worked hand in hand to clean and restore the campfire area. The remnants of the previous night’s warmth were carefully tended to, ensuring that the site retained its natural charm. Later, they had their breakfast and scattered for different activities.

Around 1.30 PM, all students finished their lunch and gathered for a reflective feedback session. Positioned in a circle, each participant shared their thoughts and experiences from the overnight adventure. Furthermore, they started winding up the camp by arranging their luggage. Before boarding the bus, they cleaned the campsite and made it trash-free.

This camp was a holistic experience that fostered resilience, teamwork, environmental consciousness, and a deeper understanding of the world outside the classroom.
